Married at age 17 to Bobby Sweatt. Both fathers were against their getting married which made them more determined to make their marriage work. Elsie finished her senior year of high school as a married girl. Bobby was drafted into the army shortly thereafter and they relocated to Ft.Jackson, SC.
After leaving the army, they moved back to Birmingham. Elsie began a career in the banking industry that would span 42 years. She trained many upcoming managers at the Irondale branch during her tenure including Dowd Ritter who later became the CEO of AmSouth bank.
Bobby & Elsie lived in Leeds and were very active members in First Baptist Church of Leeds for over 50 years. Both served in several capacities at FBC and loved their church and community.
Elsie was an avid Alabama football and Braves baseball fan. For many years they attended games supporting these teams.
Elsie also had a passion for sewing and enjoyed making children's clothes, especially girls dresses. She obtained a great deal of satisfaction making hand made heirloom clothes for her grandchildren and community children
