Smith, Martha Lorene West, of Leeds, AL passed away September 29, 2017 at the age of 75 surrounded by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny, son, Bradley and great granddaughter, Averie-Claire Smith.
Martha was a 1960 graduate of Leeds High School & a 1990, Summa Cum Laude, graduate of UAB, where she later went on to earn a Masters Degree in English. Martha was employed by Jefferson State Community College where she worked as the Director of Disability Services where she fought hard to ensure students' rights to accommodations key to their educational understanding. Working with these students was her passion. She taught Sunday School several years at Mt Hebron Baptist Church and served as Director of GA's. She continued to teach Sunday school classes for years until finally settling in at her church home of Leeds First Baptist where she continued to do the same. Over the years she has held many positions on different committees such as Leeds Historical Society and Leeds Arts Council where she also enjoyed starring in several plays. She served on the Mt. Hebron Cemetery Association and Mt. Hebron Schoolhouse Committee where she was instrumental in their receiving historical status and obtaining the historical markers for each. Martha lived her life devoted to serving others. She was most happy when she was spreading the love of God. If you paused, you heard it. She thrived on making others happy, sharing the blessings of God and sharing that infectious smile to absolutely everyone she met. She was loved by everyone that knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Smith Norris; sons, Alan Smith (Lisa), Ronnie Smith (Rhonda); brother, Charles "Buddy" West; grandchildren, Alana Smith (Patrick), Ron Smith (Shelly), Kayla Jones (Deddrick), Holly Sanders (Lewis), Matthew Norris, Will Norris; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Weston Smith, Jackson Smith, Harper Jones, Aspen Sanders.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 2, 2017 at Leeds First Baptist Church from 11AM to 1PM with a funeral service to follow at 1PM. There will be a private graveside service for family only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt.Hebron Schoolhouse Restoration.
